New Social Care plans – “Devil in Detail” PDF Print E-mail
Wednesday, 25 November 2009 09:57

Andrew Turner has condemned proposals to integrate the Attendance Allowance (AA) and Disability Living Allowance (DLA) for over-65s in a new social care system.

The Government’s Personal Care at Home Bill, a step on the way to a National Care Service, was announced in the Queen’s Speech last week. The small print of the plans to create a National Care Service shows that Attendance Allowance and Disability Living Allowance for pensioners would be scrapped to pay for it.

It is estimated that the proposed changes to the social care system would on average take £3,400 a year away from 2.4 million pensioners. Official figures reveal that on the Island this would affect 6,270 pensioners – 4,470 who receive Attendance Allowance, worth an average of £60 a week, and 1,800 who receive Disability Living Allowance, worth an average of £75 a week.

Are You One Of The Lucky Ones

ISLANDERS are, once again, being given the chance to air their views about living on the Island, on services provided by the IW Council and also how they want to see council tax spent next year.

Over the coming weeks, over 1,000 households will be contacted by telephone as part of this year's residents' survey.

The survey is a major part of an annual consultation exercise that provides the most accurate account of how Island residents feel about life here and also about council services now and in the future. It is a chance for residents to say which areas of council services are working well and which need improvement.

The next steps of a radical Isle of Wight Council programme to cut bureaucracy and save £300 million in the coming 25 years will be presented to the authority's Cabinet next week.

Cabinet members will be asked to approve the next stages of the Transformation Programme the far-reaching project through which the council is improving the efficiency in the way it delivers services.

Over the next three years a number of projects will be undertaken to bring about this aim, allowing the council to better target resources on the areas for which it has a statutory responsibility and on those services that are most important to residents.
