The Last Of The Vestival Site

Vestas roundabout has now been cleared by the bailiffs. The enforcement officers arrived today at the Vestas roundabout to remove the last of the green supporters & ex Vesta workers after a county court hearing gave Mr Hanslip, the land owner permission to evict them.

After some talking, occupiers of the site at St Cross business park, Newport told the enforcement officers it would take a little while for them to clear the site but bailiffs said they still only had until 12.00 before the deadline came into place.

Staying Until Redundancies Paid

The Magic Roundabout has been alive for months now: a continuous show of solidarity with the spirit of working-class direct action that brought it into life. Today, it is under threat with a repossession order filed by the landlords, the Hanslips, to the county court.

It started with people wanting to maintain a constant presence in support of the group of workers who had gone out on a limb and taken the rare and bold step of occupying the offices of the management of Vestas Blades UK. This, to protest against the unilateral closure of the biggest private employer in an area of high unemployment, in a time of recession.

The people remaining on the ‘Magic Roundabout’ protest camp down on the Isle of Wight outside the now closed Vestas factory have been officially handed their eviction order by the land owner (Hanslips?), and the court hearing will be tomorrow, Tuesday 24 November.

Energy Secretary Ed Miliband

An Isle of Wight delegation has returned from a meeting with Energy Secretary Ed Miliband hopeful that Government aid could be on its way to help create local green jobs.

The delegation met Mr Miliband on Thursday afternoon to discuss how the Island can expand its renewable technologies industry. Included in the party were IW MP Andrew Turner, IW Council leader David Pugh and chief executive Steve Beynon and Labour councillor Geoff Lumley.

Winds of change as green MEP meets ex-Vestas workers PDF Print E-mail

Green Party leader Dr. Caroline Lucas, met with the workers who were sacked for occupying the Vestas factory earlier this year, along with Union and Trades Council representatives, local supporters and activists who have been camped out on the roundabout at the factory entrance since July.

Dr. Lucas, who is also Prospective parliamentary candidate for Brighton Pavillion, spent two hours on the roundabout learning first hand about the struggle of the workers and their supporters. She was shown around the camp before being invited to share lunch with everyone. She heard the full story of the three months since 18 workers occupied the factory for 18 days.
