Dangers At Mersley Downs

A scheme aimed at reducing the number of collisions that occur at a junction and bend along the Mersley Downs Road has got underway.

Over the last three years there have been 13 accidents resulting in personal injury, including one fatal incident, along the stretch of road near the Lime Kiln Shute junction. The Isle of Wight Council is undertaking resurfacing and re-profiling work at the bend, and making improvements to visibility at the junction of Lime Kiln Shute. Anti-skid surfacing is being applied to both locations and it is hoped that these works will significantly improve the accident rate here.

Check Age Limits On Games

Isle of Wight Council Trading Standards is reminding parents of the law regarding the purchase of certain computer games in the run up to Christmas.

Virtually every computer game across all formats such as Playstation, Xbox 360 and Nintendo Wii carry recommended age ratings and guidance on the game's content. Age ratings range from 3+ (suitable for persons aged 3 and above) up to 18+.

Outbreak Of Suspected Norovirus

The Chief Nurse at St Mary’s Hospital is asking the public to restrict visits to patients there while infection control staff deal with an outbreak of suspected Norovirus (viral gastroenteritis) that has affected part of the hospital.

St. Mary’s Hospital are keen to discourage visits by anyone who has been unwell recently, especially if they have had vomiting or diarrhoea in the past 48 hours. Everyone who does visit the hospital is encouraged to go through the main entrance and to use the hand-cleaning gels in the reception area as well wash their hands on entering and leaving ward areas.

More Accessible HIV Testing

World Aids Day on the 1st December marks the introduction of a new more accessible HIV testing service on the Island.

As the first of its kind in England, Dr Keith Ridge, Chief Pharmaceutical Officer for England, will be opening it. From the 1st December eight pharmacies across the Island will be offering free HIV blood spot testing to anyone who thinks they may have been exposed to HIV.
