Whether you have family and friends visiting over the holidays, or just want to make the most of the extra few days off, there are plenty of opportunities to get out and about on the Island during Christmas week.

After the indulgence of Christmas Day, you can let off steam at the Isle of Wight Steam Railway's Mince Pie Specials (26-28 December). Settle back in one of their comfortable, vintage carriages as you travel through some of the Island's winter landscape.

Quarr Abbey, Near Ryde

This Christmas, Quarr Abbey is giving local people the chance to learn more about life at the Island's monastery.

The specially-organised Christmas tour on Wednesday 16 December will be led by Father Luke Bell, who has written a book about the monks' daily routine, A Deep and Subtle Joy: Life at Quarr Abbey, available from the abbey bookshop.

Brian Supports Walking Festival

The UK's biggest walking festival returns in 2010 with one of the UK's biggest personalities, Brian Blessed.

Brian Blessed, who recently caused a sensation when he chaired the BBCs satirical news show, Have I Got News for You, will be sharing his inspiring stories of ascending Mount Everest with visitors at a one-man show during the Isle of Wight Walking festival, which next year returns with more great themed walks than ever before.

Festive Fun Day Coming Soon

A day of festive wreath making, music and poetry will take place at St Thomas' Church and Heritage Centre in Ryde on Saturday 5 December 2009.

Planned to coincide with the town's Festive Fun Day which includes a lantern parade and fireworks display, the Isle of Wight Council owned building is opening its doors for free between 10am and 4.30pm.

The Festive Events Are Coming
!

We spotted this on the Isle of Wight council's website. It seems as if it's aimed at tourists to the Island but we can't see why it wasn't aimed at us locals aswell. We have edited this PR to be more 'Island Friendly'.

With lots of festive events in the lead up to Christmas, this November and December are an especially magical time to get out and do something seasonal.
