> £1.3 MILLION TO IMPROVE PLAY AREAS

Play areas across the Island are to be improved, new ones built and more recreational opportunities offered to young people thanks to a £1.3 million grant secured by the Isle of Wight Council.

The new play areas, half of which will be in place by April 2010, promise to be innovative and stimulating, incorporating the latest play equipment and landscaping to create physically active play opportunities for a broad range of age groups. This is possible thanks to a £1 million-plus grant from the Department of Children, Schools and Families.

> RETURN TO SPORT SUCCESS LEADS TO ANOTHER NEW CLUB

A third new sports club has been set us a direct result of Isle of Wight Council’s successful ‘Return to Sport’ courses.

A dedicated badminton group has been established at West Wight Sports Centre and will be running every Wednesday evening between 1900 to 2000, starting on 8 April. Anyone aged 16 and above is welcome and the cost is just £2 a person.

Earlier this year, two new sports groups were created thanks to the Return to Sport initiative. Rew Valley Badminton group and a Ladies Squash group at Westridge in Ryde are now meeting weekly, providing the new players with the opportunity to develop their skills in a fun, social playing environment.

> SPORT FOR ALL AT THE NEW INCLUSIVE CLUB

A brand new sports club has been created on the Isle of Wight for children and young people with disabilities.

The IW Inclusive Club has been formed by eight year old James Loosemore who has cerebral palsy. He wanted to create a football club for children and young people, including those with disabilities or learning difficulties, who enjoy sport and want to play football in a fun and informal atmosphere.

> SET UP OF DEDICATED CHILDS SPORTS CLUB

Isle of Wight children between the ages of 8 to 13 can benefit from two new sports clubs being set up by Isle of Wight Council through Sport England lottery funding.

The Ryde Multi-Sports Club begins from Sunday 26 April at Ryde Sports Centre and as the title suggests, a variety of sporting activities will be on offer each week. For just £2 for a two hour session, participants will take part in sports including football, netball, hockey, tennis, cricket, rounders and basketball. The new club will run on a Sunday morning between 1000 and 1200.

> PLAY RANGER SCHEME THANKS TO LOTTERY FUNDING

Free play sessions for children and young people are to be made available through a new Play Ranger scheme thanks to lottery funding secured by the Isle of Wight Council.

A team of Play Rangers will be putting the fun back into play by offering a range of after school and holiday activities in the Island’s parks and open spaces. The sessions operate on an ‘open access’ policy, so no booking is required, children simply need to turn up at the sessions which will be advertised locally through schools and community groups.
