Woman taken to hospital, hurt by bus in Newport town PDF Print E-mail

A woman has been taken to St Marys hospital after a collision with a Southern Vectis bus in the centre of Newport town.

Police have since closed the bus lane at the junction of the High Street and Pyle Street, as they investigate how she was injured.

It happened at around 2:20pm on Thursday afternoon. The woman was first treated at the scene for head injuries which are not thought to be life threatening. The number 1 bus service is currently effected by the road closure and there are delays of around 10 mins because of slow moving traffic.

New Changes To Southern Vectis

The summers is now over, the tourists have gone home and Southern Vectis are making more changes to the services they provide.

From the 20th December 2009 our Isle of Wight bus service is changing, Some routes will now have 50% less buses running and some route dropped completely. Southern Vectis, Owned by the go ahead group quoted on the flyer "Some of our buses and routes are changing to allow better connections to ferries at Yarmouth, reduce delays where there have been problems and help us keep costs down in the current economic climate"

No Pay Rise For SV Drivers This Year

In conjunction with the recent publication by Plymouth City Council of a report regarding the sale of Plymouth CityBus on its website, the Go-Ahead Group plc is pleased to confirm it has offered to acquire for cash 100% of the share capital of Plymouth CityBus from Plymouth City Council for an enterprise value of £20m.

This follows the announcement on 12 November that Go-Ahead had been selected as preferred bidder for the business. Completion is subject to full council approval, which is expected at the end of this month.

Bus Money - To Little To Late

Andrew Turner, the Island’s MP, has said it is right that the Government is finally to consult on amending the grant formula which funds free national bus travel for pensioners but has damned it as being ‘much too little – far too late’.

In a letter to Mr Turner dated 4th November the Transport Minister, Sadiq Khan MP said that the revised grant formula would lead to increases in payments to around 30 local authorities including an additional £890,000 to the Island for the financial year 2010/11. It would be paid for by reducing the grant to London and 63 other authorities.

Reaction to Government’s urban transport report PDF Print E-mail

Reacting to the Government report on urban transport, Campaign for Better Transport calls on the Government to do more to help local authorities to improve transport. 

Richard Hebditch, the group’s campaigns director, said: “The Government urgently needs to set out a new policy direction on transport in urban areas and we’re very pleased that the Strategy Unit’s urban transport report begins to do that. It shows how important a good transport system is for the health and quality of life of people living in towns and cities. But the Government needs to challenge local authorities more to improve transport and equip local transport authorities with the powers, funding and capability to really make a difference on transport.”
