Academy Off To A Flying Start

The Isle of Wight Council-run Optimist Sailing Academy has got off to a flying start with 21 young and talented sailors taking part in the first training session.

Held at the Royal Victoria Yacht Club on 7 November, the young sailors aged between 8 and 15 were taken through their paces at the first training session. The day focused on boat handling skills, including tacking, gybing and speed control through a mixture of theory and on the water coaching.

Make Running More Accessible

The Isle of Wight Council is looking for people to become leaders of a new scheme launched by UK Athletics called Run in England.

The scheme is designed to make running more accessible and aims to create groups within communities, workplaces and schools to encourage and guide beginner runners and recreational runners who run or walk for fitness.

New Sailing Academy For The Island

A new sailing academy has been created on the Island to develop talent for the 2010 World Island Youth Games and beyond.

The Isle of Wight Council has developed an Optimist Academy to develop the sailing skills of talented sailors aged between eight and 15. The Academy has been designed to create a pathway from club sailing and racing to national events and competitions.

Get Moving Challenge

“Over 100 people have already signed up for the Island’s ‘Get Moving’ Challenge and more are welcome,” says NHS Isle of Wight Health Promotion Specialist, Rachel McKernan. 

“Everyone knows that getting more active is good for your physical health, but this campaign is about getting the message out there that it is also really beneficial for your mental health.”

Badminton course starts 3rd Nov

Bookings are now being taken on Isle of Wight Council's latest courses under its popular 'Return to Sport' scheme.

Starting in November, four new courses are being held across the Island from a variety of sports or activities.

A seven week badminton course gets underway on Tuesday 3 November at West Wight Sports Centre between 1930 - 2030. It costs £14 per person, working out to just £2 per session.
